1. What has changed.
Noosa Day Hospital, the new day surgery inside the Noosa Specialist Medical Centre on Hofmann Drive, has added Dr Coory to its list of operating surgeons.1 The hospital is operated by Cura Day Hospitals Group and is its third facility on the Sunshine Coast. It has three operating theatres, with seven first stage recovery beds and ten second stage recovery chairs.2
For patients north of the river, that is the practical part of the news. Dr Coory has consulted in Noosaville for some time, and the Noosa shoulder surgeon page sets out what that involves. Until now, an operation meant a drive south. A proportion of upper limb surgery is day-case work, and that portion can now be done in Noosa.
2. What a day hospital covers, and what it does not.
A day hospital is licensed for surgery where you are admitted and discharged on the same day. There is no overnight ward. That model suits shorter procedures where the anaesthetic is well tolerated and the recovery happens at home, which describes a good deal of hand, wrist and elbow work and much of what is done arthroscopically.
It does not cover operations that need an inpatient bed. That distinction matters more than it sounds, because it is the thing patients most often assume works the other way.
Procedures that continue at the private hospitals.
Mako robotic-assisted shoulder replacement, reverse total shoulder replacement and anatomic total shoulder replacement all involve an overnight stay, and continue to be performed at Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital and Maroochy Private Hospital. Which hospital your surgery is booked into is a clinical decision, not a geographic one, and it is made at your consultation once the operation itself has been settled. You do not need to contact the hospital yourself to arrange anything. If an operation is booked, the hospital will contact you with your admission time and fasting instructions once a date is set. 4. The pathway to a booking has not changed.
A new theatre location does not change how you get to one.
- You will need a current referral from your GP or another practitioner. Referrals are what allow a Medicare rebate to apply to the consultation.
- You will be examined, not just have your scan read. Bring any imaging you already have.
- Non-surgical options are discussed first where they are reasonable. Most shoulders seen in clinic do not end up having an operation.
