Dr Coory holds MBBS, Dip.Surg.Anat, FRACS and FAOrthA qualifications. After completing orthopaedic training and admission as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in shoulder and upper limb surgery. His practice today is confined to that region of the body, which means the conditions described on this page are the ones he treats every week rather than occasionally.
He holds an academic appointment with the University of the Sunshine Coast, where he is listed as an investigator with UniSC Clinical Trials, and has published in the peer-reviewed orthopaedic literature including the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Mako robotic shoulder replacement.
Dr Coory was the first surgeon on the Sunshine Coast to perform Mako robotic-assisted total shoulder replacement, and has since performed more than 100 of these procedures. The system builds a three-dimensional plan from a pre-operative CT scan, then uses a surgeon-controlled robotic arm to guide preparation of the bone so the implant can be positioned to match the individual patient's anatomy.
Robotic assistance is a tool rather than a treatment in itself. Whether it is appropriate depends on the condition, the quality of the remaining bone and the state of the rotator cuff, which is why the decision is made after assessment and imaging rather than in advance.

Do I need a referral to see a shoulder surgeon on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. To claim a Medicare rebate on your consultation you need a current referral. A GP referral lasts 12 months and a specialist referral lasts 3 months. If you do not have a referral you are still welcome to make an appointment, but the consultation will not attract a rebate. Dr Coory's rooms can guide you through what your GP needs to include.

How long is the wait for an appointment?
Waiting times vary with urgency and location. Acute injuries and fractures are prioritised. The rooms are open Monday to Friday and can advise on the next available appointment across the three consulting sites, which sometimes differ.
Does Dr Coory treat work-related and accident injuries?
Yes. Dr Coory sees patients under WorkCover Queensland and compulsory third party arrangements. Approval details differ between schemes, so contact the rooms before your appointment so the paperwork can be arranged in advance.
